Puli is a medium breed of dogs and is similar to a Komondor. They are known for their corded coats that resemble dreadlocks. Puli’s are generally a health and hardy breed and only a number of health issues afflict this breed. Let us identify those health issues and know how to prevent them to keep your dog in the peak of health.

Joint Dysplasia

What is it?

Joint dysplasia is a condition where the bone is dislodged from the joint. The bone then grinds to the surrounding area and limits the movement of the affected joint. This usually affects the hips and elbows. Joint dysplasia causes pain and is noticeable through the way your dog walks. They usually exhibit limping, laming of the limbs, hopping, and/or favoring the unaffected side when sitting.

How can I prevent this?

Weight management is the most important factor in preventing this condition. When your Puli increase its size, this causes additional pressure to the joint and may cause dislocation. Make sure NOT to give your dog foods that are very high in carbohydrates and fat. Brisk walking or jogging would be excellent exercises for your dog to shed those unwanted calories.

Skin and Ear Infections

What is it?

This simply is the invasion of bacteria in your dog’s skin or ears. The dog is predisposed to these due to allergies, parasite infestations, and unmaintained coats. If left untreated, skin and ear infections may lead to other problems such as blood diseases or deafness.

How can I prevent this?

Proper grooming would be the primary intervention for this condition. The tight curls in your Puli’s coat should be separated to avoid matting. Regular bathing, of course, is important. Consult your vet first, however, for the type of dog shampoo to use to avoid allergies or irritations. Keep the ears hair free by clipping or removing the hair build up.
